Anglo Scottish Cup Week 2014

After welcoming in the new year with some fresh snow, we were able to get started holding the Anglo Scottish Race week here in Les Houches. The competitions were well fought and exciting. 260 young racers attended the series. 90 bairns and lassies, U10/U12 (also known as Minis), and 170 children, U14/U16. Despite rain and snow, with a big effort from athletes, ESF, parents and staff it was a great success. The hospitality tents, giant tartiflette and vin chaud might also have helped.

The Minis had 3 days of racing, and a fourth if they qualified in the GS for the chance to compete alongside the children in the final race.  Although there were lots of familiar faces at these races, it was great to see a good number of new families enjoying what BSA has to offer and likewise with new coaching staff doing a fantastic job on the hill. Well done, Team!

With a number of our athletes qualifying for the children’s race we had some good results, however a massive well done to Ted Slade who came in 1st U12 boy in the children’s GS.  All the minis did very well during the Anglo Scottish races, Kita O’Neill winning bronze medals in her first races. Even those who did not quite make the podium took huge steps forward in personal performance, one of whom is Miki Petrovic who was new to us last season, achieving a 7th in the Giant Slalom and 8th in Combi.
The children competed over 4 days with 2 days of Slalom followed by 2 days Giant Slalom. Fresh snow before the start of the races made for some tough conditions with the children having deal with a few bumps and ruts. Nevertheless we saw a very high standard of racing with some close competition. It was a big test for some of the new U14’s many of whom had little experience in Slalom on snow but they rose to the challenge and produced some excellent results.

With the first big races of the season done and dusted, school term time has now started at the academy and the focus has shifted back to training to make those vital improvements working towards a warm up at the Welsh and then the English Champs in February. With finally more snow to begin gate training and cover across the whole mountain we are starting to make some great progress. New this season, we have extended our gym and ski room space which is being fully utilised to work on our dry land training. To add to their skiing skills BSA children have been telemark skiing this week with World Cup coach Sebastian Mansart. This is something new to all of the children and they had great fun learning the skill with a few falls in the process.
The first time BSA had a telemark week young Jasmin Taylor caught the bug…. http://jaztelemark.com/about/jasmin-taylor/

Murren Kandahar Race Week

 http://murrenkandaharrace.com/

With the first training in Les Houches on the 14th of December, we had some challenging snow conditions to deal with. The lack of snow meant less time in the gates, and more focus on technical training in the run up to Christmas. We travelled to a number of resorts around the Chamonix valley and Courmayeur, Italy, before Les Houches opened fully 21st December.  The minis and some of our younger Children were lucky enough to travel to Murren for 4 days. They took part in a Giant Slalom Race, Kombi and Free Ride competitions, and had a great evening sledging by moonlight.
